The Olympus Science classroom was nominated by LGMS staff member, Mrs. Gaby Bailey, to receive a Lettuce Grow hydroponic farmstand which was donated by the Lettuce Grow company. This amazing company donates one stand to a classroom for every ten stands that they sell. Lettuce Grow provided a 24-plant stand, nutrients, a pH testing kit, and seedlings to the class. Our own LGMS PTO generously donated the funds for the attached light rings.
Students have been learning about how the hydroponic farmstand works, the benefits of distributed agriculture, and about the plants that we voted on as a class and planted in the stand. We are also utilizing the farmstand plants in our Math Applications class to study measurement, data and statistics.
The group of students pictured were the first to get to stay after school to work with the stand and create a maintenance and harvesting plan for the stand, and we have more students excited to stay after for upcoming meetings. We look forward to working with the Badger Agriculture department as well as local greenhouses to continue learning about sustainable gardening and future agriculture-focused opportunities for our students. Thank you to the Lettuce Grow company, our LGMS PTO, and to Mrs. Gaby Bailey for this amazing learning opportunity for our students!
